Gwyneth Paltrow mocked for saying she 'went totally off the rails' eating bread during the pandemic

Gwyneth Paltrow is being mocked on Twitter for saying she ‘went totally off the rails’ and ate bread during the pandemic.

Appearing on the SmartLess podcast last week, the 48-year-old Goop founder discussed how her normally very health eating habits fell by the wayside during 2020, and she found herself eating bread, making pasta, and having two cocktails a night.

Social media users have fixated on how Gwyneth indicated that ‘eating bread’ was an indicator of going ‘off rails,’ with some blasting her for flaunting her privilege after part of her quote was taken out of context.

Gwyneth told podcast hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett that she has ‘been on a bit of a clean-out’ after forming some unhealthy habits during the pandemic.

‘Basically during quarantine, I was drinking seven nights a week and making pasta and eating bread. I went totally off the rails,’ she said.

‘I mean, who drinks multiple drinks seven nights a week? Like, that’s not healthy,’ she added.

‘I love whiskey and I make this fantastic drink called the Buster Paltrow, which I named after my grandfather who loved whiskey sours. And it’s this great quinoa whiskey from this distillery in Tennessee with maple syrup and lemon juice. It’s just heaven. I would have two of those every night of quarantine.’

While Gwyneth’s ‘off the rails’ description seems to be mostly directed at her alcohol intake, social media users have zeroed in on her mention of her bread and pasta habit.

Many have tweeted jokes about Gwyneth seeming to make a big deal over something so commonplace, with several also sharing memes.

‘Damn she better slow down. She might end up becoming a regular person,’ quipped one Twitter user.

‘Tell me you have a privileged life without telling me you have a privileged life,’ said another.

‘So Gwyneth Paltrow ate bread during lockdown and that’s the most relatable she’s ever been,’ tweeted the Daily Beast’s Molly Jong-Fast.

Writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner reminisced, ‘Gwyneth ate bread in front of me. Just one piece because I ate the other seven.’

‘The craziest thing about this is that Gwyneth actually baked the bread with a heated jade egg inside her vagina,’ joked another critic.

‘Just read a very harrowing account of Gwyneth Paltow being forced to eat bread during the pandemic so I might need to lie down for a bit,’ yet another chimed in.

But the criticism really took a turn after The Guardian wrote about the interview — and in tweeting about it, implied that Gwyneth had described eating bread as her ‘lowest point’ in the pandemic, though she did not.

‘Gwyneth Paltrow broke down and ate bread during quarantine. What was your lowest point?’ the newspaper tweeted.

That tweet was quickly inundated with replies by horrified Twitter users who shared their own strikingly bleak ‘lowest points.’

‘It WAS my dad getting covid but now it’s finding out Gwyneth Paltrow ate bread,’ said writer Broti Gupta.

‘Hmm. I think my lowest point was when we past the half-million mark of people who died in just the US,’ replied writer Roxane Gay.

‘If I had to make a list — it was probably when my mom died, closely followed by three hurricanes hitting the state in the middle of a goddamn pandemic, followed by when I was sick for a month with the virus, but I hope Gwyneth is okay,’ said another commenter.

Wrote one more: ‘My father was exposed to Covid19 in a memory care home April 2020, hospitalized the day after I watched helpless outside his room window, as he shivered uncontrollably; doctor told us he’s “not a candidate for a ventilator.” died 3 days later.’

‘I became homeless but sorry about the millionaire eating bread I guess,’ someone else sniffed.

‘My lowest point was when my mother died and I could not be there. But that bread thing is pretty sad too,’ added yet another critic.

One Twitter user said a ‘bunch of people I loved died,’ adding that they lost a job they’d had for 25 years and its associated health benefits.

‘But, damn, can’t say I ever went as low as Gwinny eating bread, so count my blessings, huh?’ they wrote.

‘My lowest point was realizing the person who made the bread for Gwyneth Paltrow lost their job, couldn’t pay rent, and is still recovering from a deadly disease,’ tweeted Tony Posnanski.

‘Seeing a tweet about Gwyneth Paltrow hitting a pandemic low point when she had to eat bread alongside a tweet about corpses in India being dumped into the Ganges because crematoria are overwhelmed tells you everything you need to know about why society is in such bad shape,’ added author Steve Silberman.

Gwyneth has also opened up about her own battle with COVID-19 long-hauler symptoms after contracting the virus early last year.

'I gained a lot of weight over COVID,' she said. 'COVID happened and I didn't do my eating plan. I just was like having alcohol and pasta all the time and then I sort of hit a wall'

‘I had COVID-19 early on, and it left me with some long-tail fatigue and brain fog,’ she wrote in the Goop piece. ‘In January, I had some tests done that showed really high levels of inflammation in my body.’

Paltrow, who starred in the 2011 pandemic thriller Contagion, said that after her diagnosis, she sought care and guidance from Dr. Cole.

‘After he saw all my labs,’ she said, ‘he explained that this was a case where the road to healing was going to be longer than usual.’

He started her on a program that includes refraining from consuming sugar or alcohol, working out, and adding supplements including butyrate, fish oil, B vitamins, vitamin D3, vitamin C, zinc, and selenium.

‘Everything I’m doing feels good, like a gift to my body,’ she said. ‘I have energy, I’m working out in the mornings, and I’m doing an infrared sauna as often as I can, all in service of healing.’

She said that in the wake of her illness, adjustments of ‘cleaning up [her] diet’ and ‘exercise, and even thought patterns … left [her] feeling energized, healthier, and — believe it or not — wanting more.’

'I think maybe some of it is because I got COVID,' she said. 'My physician in New York was saying that that was affecting a lot of his patients' metabolisms as well'

Later, in an episode of the Dear Media podcast The Art of Being Well, Gwyneth admitted that she used to be able to ‘snap back’ really easily after putting on a few pounds, but over the past year — since contracting COVID-19 — that hasn’t been the case.

‘I’ve noticed over the past couple of years that my metabolism is slowed down,’ she said.

‘I know a lot of that is perimenopause. I’m 48 years old, and I know that women tend to lose up to 30 per cent of their metabolic speed once we enter this phase of life, et cetera. So I know some of it is that.’

But since this past year has been particularly hard, she thinks her struggle with long COVID has also contributed to her weight issues.

‘I think maybe some of it is because I got COVID,’ she said. ‘My physician in New York was saying that that was affecting a lot of his patients’ metabolisms as well.

‘What I really noticed was the snap back that I used to have — you know, if I gained some weight and I wasn’t happy, I could quickly eat really well for a couple of days, exercise a lot, and it would all be gone.

‘And that was not happening over the past year,’ she added.

‘I gained a lot of weight over COVID,’ she went on. ‘COVID happened and I didn’t do my eating plan. I just was like having alcohol and pasta all the time and then I sort of hit a wall.’
