Actor Michael J. Fox, a career military man from Canada, made his television debut at age 15 in Vancouver. Three years later, he relocated to the United States and lived in substandard housing while waiting for his green card. A regular role on the weekly series Palmerstown, U.S.A. and a supporting role in the theatrical feature Midnight Madness followed Fox’s simultaneous debut on American TV and film in 1980.

The actor was previously credited as Michael Fox, but the Screen Actors Guild required him to append the “J” to his name to avoid confusion with an older character actor of the same name. The baby-faced Fox was able to play teenagers and young adults long into his thirties thanks to his height of 5’4″, but in the beginning of his career, his height cost him more opportunities than it brought him.

The diminutive actor provided his talents to another adorable character in 1999 when he provided the voice of Stuart Little in the movie version of E.B. A well-known children’s book by White about a mouse who can move and speak. Fox has been married to Tracy Pollan since 1988; on the television show Family Ties, she played his longtime girlfriend. Fox attributes his survival of his Parkinson’s Disease battle to Pollan.
